Angry Harper hit in face by own bat, out 2 days

CINCINNATI (AP) — Washington rookie Bryce Harper will miss a couple of days after he took an angry swing and his own bat accidentally hit him near the eye.

Harper later batted with blood trickling down his face during Friday night's 7-3 win at Cincinnati.

The 19-year-old Harper went 0 for 5 and struck out three times. At one point, he took a frustrated whack at a wall in the tunnel leading to the clubhouse.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson said the barrel of the bat bounced off the wall and hit Harper next to the left eye, causing a gash and welt. He got bandaged, but was sent for treatment afterward because it was bleeding.

Johnson says Harper probably needs to be stitched up and will out for a couple of days.
