RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Former FIFA president Joao Havelange has entered his second week in hospital and remains in a serious condition because of an infection in his right ankle.
The Samaritano Hospital said in a statement Monday that the 95-year-old Havelange is being treated with antibiotics and his health still requires close attention.
Havelange was hospitalized March 18 with septic arthritis, a dangerous bacterial infection which affects the joints. He is breathing without a ventilator.
He resigned from the International Olympic Committee last year citing undisclosed health reasons, avoiding a possible suspension for allegedly taking kickbacks from former FIFA marketing partner ISL in the 1990s.
Havelange presided over FIFA from 1974-98.
