NEW DELHI (AP) — India is not expecting to be punished by the International Olympic Committee for keeping Suresh Kalmadi as the nominal president of the national Olympic body despite even though he was jailed on corruption charges.
Acting Indian Olympic Association chief Vijay Kumar Malhotra said Friday that while Kalmadi has not formally resigned from his post, he had written two letters to the IOA saying he would not represent the organization in any manner.
Malhotra said "we have informed the International Olympic Committee about Kalmadi's letters and don't expect any sanctions."
Kalmadi was freed on bail last month after spending a year in prison facing corruption charges related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, in which the budget ballooned from $412 million to $15 billion.
