Energy consumption tends to increase alongside population size, but industrial energy usage is a far greater share of U.S. consumption than residential energy usage. Many of the states that use the most energy per capita have relatively small populations and residential energy use, meaning that their consumption is driven by commercial, industrial, and transportation energy usage. Here are the 10 states with the highest per capita energy usage, according to data from the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration and the U.S. Census Bureau.
