Through the first four months of 2011, gas prices averaged $3.45. Currently, they're hovering around the $4 mark in most states. How does the recent gas crisis compare to past ones in terms of pain at the pump?

Using data provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the American Petroleum Insitute (obtained via inflationdata.com), here's a look at the 10 most expensive years (adjusted for inflation) through 2010. In the rare instances where the two sources provided different prices, the average was used.
