Death Toll Estimate: Roughly 3,500

Protests broke out in Syria around the same time that the Libyan conflict escalated in March. However, unlike rebels in Libya, Syrian protesters have remained largely peaceful in their attempt to overthrow President Assad. Last week, Assad’s government signed a peace plan with the League of Arab States, vowing to end violence against his nation’s citizens. However, the UN has reported that as many as 60 Syrians have been killed since that agreement was signed on Nov. 2.
