The Russian-born screenwriter and novelist was one of many notable faces to testify in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947. Director Elia Kazan, actor Robert Taylor, and then-Screen Actors Guild president Ronald Reagan also appeared before the committee to discuss the threat of communism in Hollywood.
