Kelly Clarkson, the winner on the first season of American Idol
in 2002, endorsed Ron Paul
in December ahead of the Iowa caucuses. "I love Ron Paul," she tweeted, "I liked him a lot during the last Republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he's got my vote. Too bad he probably won't." Sales of her album Stronger
shot up 442 percent in the two days immediately following her tweet.
Afterwards, her Twitter account exploded with fans who were upset with her pick because of decades-old newsletters bearing Paul's signature that some have characterized as racist. She responded to the criticism, saying that she "never heard that Ron Paul is a racist or a homophobe."
