"Climate-friendly" and emissions-free sources of energy, like solar and wind, carry many more upfront costs for consumers than traditional sources of energy, like coal and oil. Even those worried about climate change sometimes have a hard time putting their own money where their mouths are, since raising the price of energy will affect the prices of many other goods throughout the country as well. Though clean energy advocates say that the long-run savings could be worth it, the current economic situation in America makes carbon-free sources of energy a tough sell.
