With well over 200,000 employees in the D.C. metro area, the federal government is the largest employer in the nation’s capital. But a diverse plethora of other job opportunities abound in the city’s many nonprofit organizations, government contractors, consulting firms, think tanks, and educational institutions. With its 6 percent unemployment rate--more than three percentage points below the national figure--it has the lowest unemployment of all cities on this list.
