WASHINGTON (AP) — The immigration bill that is headed for the Senate floor represents a significant win for the high-tech industry, and it's no accident.
To the chagrin of organized labor and its Democratic allies, the high-tech industry was able to win concessions from the Senate Judiciary Committee thanks to the intercession of Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah.
Hatch helped the industry stave off controls sought by Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois aimed at ensuring U.S. workers get the first crack at jobs.
The resulting legislation grants top high-tech priorities, including unlimited green cards for foreigners who get advanced degrees in tech and science fields from U.S. universities, and more visas for highly skilled workers.
