WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has called on Republican Mitt Romney to release his past tax returns, saying that candidates for office need to be "as transparent as possible."

Obama told Univision in an interview conducted at the Summit of the Americas in Colombia that candidates need to disclose their tax records as a way of letting the public know their financial background. It was the first time Obama had made the request personally, His campaign has pressured Romney to release a trove of tax documents going back to the 1990s.

"I think that it's important for any candidate in public office to be as transparent as possible, to let people know who we are, what we stand for, and you know, I think that this is just carrying on a tradition that has existed throughout the modern presidency," Obama said in an interview scheduled to air Sunday on Univision's "Al Punto" program.

Romney has released tax returns for 2010 and provided an estimate for 2011 as part of the release of hundreds of pages of tax documents. The former Massachusetts governor filed for an extension on Friday for last year's tax returns, a move he has made in the past.

Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said Obama was trying to "distract Americans from the real issues with a series of sideshows." She said Romney would "release his full 2011 return when it's filed."

Obama has released tax returns for last year, showing that he paid more than $160,000 in federal taxes on nearly $790,000 in income. Obama's campaign has released tax information going back to 2000.

Romney earned $21.7 million in 2010 and paid about $3 million in taxes. In 2011, his campaign has estimated he earned about $21 million and will pay more than $3.2 million in taxes. His campaign has said he will file his tax returns before the 2012 election.

And while Romney is at it, why doesn't he speak more about his faith and how it will help him to make the important decisions that a president will have to make? Is Romney ashamed to talk about his Mormon faith? Obviously he is, and the social conservatives are starting to wake up now that Santorum is out of the race. They are now looking for a man of faith in this race, and they are showing their disapproval of Romney by finally looking at Ron Paul. I still can't see what the social conservatives saw in Rick Santorum, when all along they had a far better choice in Ron Paul. It probably had something to do with Mike "Huckleberry" putting his stamp of approval on Rick Santorum in Iowa. Now that Rick Santorum is out, and the disgusting swinger Newt Gingrich not even to be considered, it finally puts the spotlight on the man who should have been the choice of every social conservative all along. Mitt Romney and the establishment that is backing him knows that his Mormon faith will not fly with social conservatives, so they just tell Mitt to keep quiet about it and hope that Mitt will just fly under the radar. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. Romney will not be able to beat Obama without every social conservative onboard with him, and that just WILL NOT happen. Then when you add in all the Ron Paul supporters who WILL NOT support Romney under any circumstances, Romney is looking at a 30 point loss to Obama. The establishment already knows that Romney CAN'T beat Obama, and are more than happy to offer up Mitt as a sacrificial lamb, rather than face the end of their neocon rule with a nominee who CAN beat Obama like Ron Paul.

I said it in 2008 and I will say it again now. Any Republican nominee (other than Ron Paul) will lose like Bob Dole in 1996. The voters are looking for prime rib but the Republican Party is offering Spam. If the establishment can not get over themselves and start looking at the health of our nation, we will all be standing in bread lines when Obama gets re-elected. Choose prime rib over Spam and vote for ron Paul!

The rich guys of America. Mitt Romney found out how to hoist himself to the top of the one percent, but seems to have not a clue about how regular people live. Barack Obama clawed his way into the one percent... by breaking the currency of the regular people of America. Many other very rich people will like us to think that these are our only two choices, regular Americans are smarter than that.

Ron Paul for President 2012~

Ron Paul rising, Americans winning.
