Romney: Alleged gunman in Afghan deaths 'deranged'

March 12, 2012 RSS Feed Print

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney says the alleged slayings of 16 Afghan civilians by a U.S. soldier are the actions of a "deranged, crazy person" and shouldn't result in a new U.S. policy in Afghanistan.

The Republican presidential candidate tells Fox News that the U.S. should regularly reassess the war in Afghanistan.

The U.S. and its NATO allies say the weekend shootings do not change plans to turn over security to Afghan troops by the end of 2014.

Asked whether he agrees with conservative commentators who say the U.S. should accelerate the pullout, Romney said Monday that he "wouldn't jump to a new policy" because of a "deranged, crazy person."

A U.S. staff sergeant is accused of wandering off his base and shooting civilians in the middle of the night.

Staff Sergeant Robert Bales AKA "deranged, crazy person", I pray you will regain your health and your countries support to rejoin the free society in the USA.

I also pray for the health and prompt recovery of the family and friends of those who lost their loved ones.

Although all I know of you is from the press, I have a similar family story of a wonderful honest man that was changed due to the effects of his service in World War II.

Ironically his wife, my Grandmother, received high praise from the Republican Party for her service as a "Rosy the Riveter" during the war. She told me all of the Rosie’s and others were working as hard as they could to bring their soldiers and loved ones home.

America cannot say the same for the Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans, as these wars have had less of an impact on the country as a whole.

This may explain the insensitive comments by Mitt Romney, a person who has not experienced the military or war. In addition, none of his children have experienced the military or the war.

I apologize for drawing in the political aspect of a very personal nature. However, your situation has prompted international attention and I believe the International community should take the time to understand your position verse jumping to “sound bite” comments that either improve their political or personal agendas.

The quote "deranged, crazy person" from Mitt Romney is insensitive and far from understanding the effects of war on soldiers. In fact, FOX news has taken credit for breaking your story; however, a search on their website resulted in “Your Search for "deranged crazy person" did not return any results.”

My prayers are with you Robert Bales.
