PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Mitt Romney is thanking Maine voters after the state party chairman declared him the winner of that state.

The former Massachusetts governor issued a statement instead of delivering a speech.

Romney had visited Maine earlier in the day but he wasn't in the state when he was declared the winner. He was on the West coast and was scheduled to attend a fundraiser.

In the statement, he says that Maine voters sent a clear message that it is past time to send an outsider to the White House. And he cast himself as a conservative with a lifetime of private sector experience, who -- in his words -- "can uproot Washington's culture of taxing and spending and borrowing and endless bureaucracy."

Mitt would be well advised to hold off on saying he won Maine until the Washington County Caucus is held. 'Winning' Maine by 200 votes, with a large County's vote's still to be cast, counted and added to Maine's is at best boastful. At worst it's outright arrogance and shows a complete disrespect for the GOP's Caucus process. 'Winning' by only 200 votes, with both the Washington County vote's still outstanding and a +/- of 3% variance in the statistics and the impact it has on the COMMITED DELEGATE COUNT, is not something I'd be in a hurry to declare as 'an outright victory' as some of Mitt's people have been quick to say. Of such arrogance has seen the downfall of Gary Hart and many other's. Declare, commit in writing, be held accountable, 'trash' the political drama and menusha and stay focused on the actual issues, not the Party platform and Mitt might actually get somewhere. He keeps going down the soap opera drama campaign trail and he might as well go home. The Country's sick of it and it's gonna catch up with a whole bunch of House member's when the votes are counted. Santorum and Paul are already well on their way down the road. At the rate the GOP's going, well, let's just say that even Capt. Kanagaroo could do better than Mitt if he doesn't get off the soap opera box.
