Ala. House resolution jokes money to grow on trees

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A Democrat has introduced a resolution in Alabama's House that apparently mocks Republican job-creation efforts by joking that scientists will soon grow money on trees.

The resolution by Rep. Daniel Boman also claims in jest that large class sizes are good for students seeking to "make more friends." It also quips: "Alabama's children should be helping our economy by working and not by learning useless skills such as reading, writing and arithmetic that are completely unessential in today's economy."

Republicans weren't amused. House Rules Committee chairman Blaine Galliher said the resolution was "inappropriate and unprofessional" and "going nowhere."

Recently, a Mississippi House lawmaker playfully ribbed other bills in that state to crack down on illegal immigration, jokingly proposing to rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America."
