1. Sanjay Gupta was born October 23, 1969, in Novi, a suburb of Detroit. He currently lives in Atlanta but remains a big fan of Michigan sports teams.

2. Gupta is an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. He also serves as a neurosurgeon at Emory University Hospital and associate chief of neurosurgery at Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital.

3. His mother, Damyanti Gupta, was the first female engineer hired by Ford Motor Co. His father, Subhash, is also a retired Ford engineer.

4. Gupta got his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Michigan. He performed his residency at the university hospital.

5. In 1997, Gupta was one of 15 selected to be White House Fellows. During the year-long fellowship, he wrote healthcare speeches for then first lady Hillary Clinton.

6. Gupta joined CNN as a medical correspondent in the summer of 2001. He currently anchors a weekend medical affairs program called House Call With Dr. Sanjay Gupta and frequently makes appearances on American Morning.

7. In 2003, he went to Iraq as an embedded reporter with the Navy's "Devil Docs" mobile surgical unit. Some journalists criticized Gupta for inserting himself into the news by performing brain surgery on a seriously injured Iraqi child. He ultimately operated on five people while he was with the medical unit.

8. Gupta was named one of People magazine's "Sexiest Men Alive" in 2003.

9. Gupta likes to listen to Frank Sinatra and the Gipsy Kings while he's working in the operating room.

10. He married Atlanta attorney Rebecca Olson Gupta in 2004. They have two daughters named Sage and Sky.
