The Associated Press's official Twitter account arguably caused a brief, but steep stock market plunge and frightened some followers Tuesday afternoon when it tweeted: "Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured."
The tweet was sent around 1 p.m. EDT Tuesday. Moments later, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney assured reporters at a routine press briefing at the White House that "the president is fine."
The AP's Twitter account, which has 1.9 million followers, was suspended soon after the tweet was sent.
MarketWatch reports the tweet "briefly caused U.S. stocks SPX +0.90% to drop." The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped more than 100 points before a quick uptick erased the losses.
It's not immediately clear who sent the tweet from the AP's account.
