Citing her spokesman, Sky News, The Independent and Reuters reported the death of the U.K.'s first female prime minister Monday morning.

"It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning," Lord Tim Bell said, according to Reuters.

According to Sky News, the "Iron Lady" was hospitalized in December to have a growth removed from her bladder.

A Twitter account impersonating Sky News elicited frenzied reactions in 2012 after falsely reporting Thatcher's death.

Thatcher was prime minister from 1979 to 1990. A conservative ally of then-U.S. President Ronald Reagan, Thatcher embarked on a project of privatizing coal mines and public utilities. She was her country's leader during its successful 1982 Falklands War against Argentina.
