Janet is not qualified since she is the one that put up the wall that prevented the intelligence agencies from discussing the 18 911 bombers. She is responsible for thousands of deaths.

Janet Napolitano is "not qualified" to be Secty of Homeland Security? Excuse me, but...Janet was Attorney General of Arizona. She was the two-term governor of AZ - a VERY difficult state to govern that has a huge population of wealthy, conservative "gated community" retirees, native Americans, Latinos, etc. It has HUGE water/resource issues, a nightmare of an immigration problem -- along with all the other problems states have at the moment. She is a single woman, a progressive Democratwho, in her second election, carried EVERY SINGLE COUNTY in the state of Goldwater and McCain. She was also the chair of two state Governors' associations and was named by Time as one of the top five governors in 2005. If you don't like her policies, that's one thing -- but to say that she's NOT QUALIFIED shows that you really don't know what you're talking about, and maybe you should read up a little bit before you write?

That memo was NOT written by Janet, but by someone in the dept. of Homeland Security. And anyone with half an eye open and half a brain could see that had "GOP Slander' written ALL over it. May I remind you that Janet has twice been seriously considered as the Democratic VP candidate; she was also one of the final few under consideration as US Attorney General and, at the time all that ludicrous tempest in a teapot was made over that memo, she was one of the final 3 people under consideration for SUPREME COURT JUSTICE. The GOP has an ax to grind becase Napolitano has never taken the idea of building a wall between the US and Mexico seriouslY (hello! Hadrian's Wall -- did that work for the Romans? The Berlin Wall -- did that work?) And she rightly went after the EMPLOYERS of illegal immigrants in addition to the immigrants. All of which earned her the hatred of the GOP. When they saw that memo, they saw their opportunity to get the military on their side (over nothing) -- and they went at it with a ridiculous vengeance. Napolitano has the Coast Guard under her jurisdition, for Christ's sake. She commanded the National Guard of AZ - to say that she's anti-military is absurd. As for doing more explaining than backing down: she had to. She was brand new in the office and a woman: had she backed down, the GOP would then have crucified her, saying she was a weakling woman -- which is just what they were hoping to do. Napolitano is no Sarah Palin - she's smart. And she wasn't going to play into the hands of the idiots calling for her head. If I were her it wouldve' made me madder than mad to have the veteran's used like htat. I can't believe that ANYONE can't see right through this.

I have known Janet Napolitano since 1977, when I was in her class at Santa Clara University (about 3000 total undergrad students at that time) and we worked with about 30 other students on the newspaper. We were never close, but I have heard her speak on a couple of occasions over the years. Janet was very smart (the first female valedictorian at SCU), NOT a "brown-noser," nice, hard-working, funny in a kind of corny, homespun way, and not someone who promoted herself or (as I recall, anyway) ever ran for student office. She describes herself as a "nerd" -- which is consonant with the sense of humor I recall. We had a feeling Janet was a special person and would "be someone." I am a (somewhat conservative) San Francisco Democrat; I have former classmates I keep in touch with who are So. CAlif. Republicans -- we have all send each other news re: Janet. I don't know ONE person who doesn't have the highest respect for her and who hasn't said they would love to work for her were she to run for VP or President. We were very sorry she wasn't put forward as Supreme Court Justice -- she would have been excellent. It is painful to see the kinds of mean, cruel, nasty and irrelevant things that are often written about Janet. I do not believe you would find a more hard-working, truly good, smart, human, humane, thoughtful person, or a person more sincerely interested in serving her country. Nor do I believe that, were she a man, such nasty comments would be made: no one would ever make the kinds of cruel personal comments about her looks that one sees.

There is another Napolitano that would make us all feel alot safer it she was at the wheel.I am referring to singer Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde/Talking Heads fame -super pipes ,smarter & way prettier.

Napolitano's most important job is to be Barack Obama & Nancy Pelosi's Ventiloquist Dummy. Let's have some intellectual honesty for a change - She got her appointment to Obama's cabinet not because she was qualified but more because she proved to the democratic party when she was governor of Arizona that she could play partisan politics with the worst of them & lie through her teeth to distort facts while trying to convince the people, (us) that what she does is best for us.

"...nearly "sank" the U.S.S. Cole".

"Always remember" ...that after impeachment proceedings began (result of having his doorknob polished by a tart who then outwitted him by stashing her soiled laundry), Bill Clinton allowed Al Qaeda to bomb two of our embassies in Kenya ,set up 911's sleeper cells & provide logistical support to the Yemeni group that nearly sunk the U.S.S. Cole.Al Qaeda was on a roll by 2001 & likely all set to implement last phase no matter who won the election.

Young Fogey of CT 5:54AM July 28, 2009

you only have a department of "Homeland Security" in an organizational mess because

1) Bush and Cheney allowed the country to be attacked on 9/11, and

2) Then had not the slightest good idea how to re-align the agencies
