Regarding comments by Diedra of IL and Mike of FL: I am white and agree with Diedra that there are many hard working blacks who are not looking for handouts and that stereotyping is the cause of too many problems. As for Mike's comments...it is true that there have been too many abuses to a system originally designed to allow some blacks to get on their feet. Unfortunately this has caused more resentment by many whites and made life more than miserable for the many blacks who would not accept any welfare. And as a result, many blacks stereotype all whites as racists, which is also far from true. The mayor of New Haven looking to secure votes from the black community,in consort with an unsavory black minister, decided that the testing system was unfair. The result of their stupidity is, of course, the further polarization of the two races. As far as government handouts...they have never really done any good in the long run. And now the biggest handouts in history have been given to white corporate leaders, who are taking their turn at abusing the system.

To Mike in Florida. The last time I checked, every black person doesn't expect handouts and ALL OF US aren't on welfare, getting food stamps and living in public housing. Everyone in my family is college educated and works hard.

And to address your comment about blacks taking jobs from Whites, the last time I checked Blacks are not filling the jobs...White women are!! Stop stereotyping!

By the way...the Black firemen didn't complain! The city decided the test wasn't fair!

Deidra of IL 6:42PM July 09, 2009

another example of the blacks expecting everything handed to them because of their race. get over it! youve gotten reparations for decades in the form of welfare, food stamps and housing and other programs for minorities! its true, whites are being discriminated against. if a black and a white try for the same job, most likely the black will get it because the employer knows blacks will use the race card and litigate regardless of his or her qualifications to do the job!

It seems that the Supreme Court's reversal was fair for more reasons than the obvious. First of all, New Haven has a population of 125,000 made up of 38% African Americans, 22% Hispanic, and 5% others, but only 35% White. There is a very small number of taxpayers (mostly White) and a very large number of welfare recipients. All these groups attend schools in New Haven and get the same educational opportunities. If the principles of "equality" are to be properly applied, then the minority (Whites) in New Haven should get preferential treatment. However, they don't want that and are not asking for that. So, where do you draw the line? Do you really want fire departments or police departments staffed with less qualified people in charge of saving our lives. Do you want unqualified school teachers in charge of your kids education? Do you want a surgeon who scores high to operate on you, or someone unqualified who was "pushed through" medical school because of political corectness? America has fallen way behind other countries in many categories because of steadily lowering standards. Is it not better to raise standards and incite people meet them? As long as there is an accomodation made to cater to people who do not take advantage of their educational opportunities, the welfare rolls will continue to grow. The fact that we now have an African-American president should be an inspiration for everyone to work hard and give it their best like he did.

Proves Sotomayor not qualified to sit on the highest court of the land!

So, what do you say, Eric Holder?

Norden of MT 2:07PM June 30, 2009

This is a slam-dunk no-brainer. It doesn't matter if the men were PURPLE, they passed the test fairly. If they're qualified, people should be grateful and feel safe knowing they can count on them. That's what's important. If they failed the test you have no right to put peoples life in jeopardy just because you're ORANGE. What doesn't anyone get? It's cut and dry. The final decision let justice finally prevail.

Quoting from the article:

"About 60 percent of circuit court decisions have been reversed by the high court in the past five years."

It drives me crazy when journalists, such as this author, wordsmith statistics that they've heard but obviously don't understand. This should have read:

"About 60 percent of circuit court decisions taken up by the Supreme Court have been reversed by the high court in the past five years."

Alex, if you don't understand the monumental difference between the above statetments, please go write for the sports page.

Wow! The Bush - Reagan Supreme Court justices ruled in favor of the white guys! You could knock me over with a feather.

SARCASM ALERT! (I'm sorry, I was supposed to put that at the beginning.)

Actually, this case was 'reverse discrimination' vs 'local control'. Something for each side to pick from, something for each side to criticize. But we all did know that the Bush - Reagan legislate-from-the-benchers would rule in favor of the white guys, didn't we?
