Basically they declared it a pandemic for two reason
1) This virus has shown some propensity to negatively effect health individuals. This is a big deal, as usually, these people aren't effect by the flu
2) It's spread a lot, and this is really off-season for flu. This will still be around come September-October, and they probably want to get ready for that.
What you can do is get the flu shot this year.

If the garden variety flu kills 36 thousand in the US each year , how does a flu that has killed 144 people world wide become a pandemic? Is the UN nuts?
Wait don't answer that.
This is getting a bit like crying woof, when we need to heed information , people will not pay attention.
