Los Angeles County has approved $800,000 for "cloud seeding" later this year. "Seeding" is a term for a process that artificially manipulates the weather in hopes of increasing rainfall.

The Department of Homeland Security is considering using similar technology to weaken hurricanes, as detailed by U.S. News.

The project is scheduled to begin this winter in the San Gabriel Mountains north of Los Angeles, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. California is suffering from a statewide drought.
