On this day of shock over the attempted assination of an Arizona Congresswoman, I think back to conservataive David Lawrence moving column after the assination of President Kennedy. The column, entitled "Before We Mourn," spoke of the rise in hate rehetoric the preceded the death of the President. I stronly recommend its re-reading.

Thank you for your excellent story about the life and times of David Laurence...... a great journalist but a little befor my time.....moreover todays U.S. News and WR is not what it used to be because a major part of the World Report has slowly been terminated......there was a time when all the major capitals of the world had an important part to play in trying to understand just exactly what was going on in our world. When I was growing up it appeared to be more informed about the facts of life and less dependent on the views and opinions of its growing body of experts.........Cordially, Steve

We, my wife and I, are overjoyed at the thought of your prime editor Zukerman, taking over the helm of probably the finest publication we have ever encountered.

Apart from the editorials and thoughts going into the writing, the aibility to draw

prime intees in a major subject, and present it with feeling, understanding and

purpose for the future, makes your magazine a blessing in our house.

Thank you for pesenting our society as worth while, and not filled with dumb, no feeling, bigots who paade as liberals, conservatives and just plan brainless in the pursiot of happiness in a face, an act and a failure to grasp even the least of our

problems.
