It is incredibly sad to see how backward thinking and full of anger so many of you people who have commented are. Immigration is a natural thing and it is what our country was founded on.

"Why [illegal immigrant] Mexicans are faring so poorly in the United States is complicated, experts say." It's not very complicated at all: they are here for reasons other than American citizenship; the loyalty is with either their homeland or the family in that homeland; they're hiding in America as criminals, stealing the freedoms that America's forefathers fought and died for; illegal immigrant Mexicans have the huevos to demand the rights and freedoms that have not been, are not, and will never be theirs. No more amnesty. No mas amnestia. Deport all illegal immigrants and their anchor babies. Transport those illiegals being shipped to their homeland deep within that territory so as to make it nearly impossible for them to return to the United States. Cancel NAFTA. Boycott Mexico if illegal immigration doesn't stop now. Stop all normal immigration. Seal the borders and deal with the mess we have.

When are Americans going to understand that we will assimilate but they will too? Im a first generation Mexican American....I’m a brown skinned Chicano and I have read Mark Twains great books and essays. I have also read great American books such as A Confederacy of Dunces, and other American short stories. I love Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seeger, and other great real artist that America has produced. I have watched almost every episode of Seinfeld. I like reading the New York Times (when I can) and the Weekly Standard. I have friends that are as 'american' as Willie Nelson. BUT...BUT I ALSO LIKE LOS CADETES DEL NORTE, CHALINO SANCHEZ, GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ, AND CHOCOLATE LA ABUELITA CON UNA CONCHA O UN BOLLILO. IN MY FAMILY WE LIKE TO SAY 'NO MANCHES HIJO', 'TE LA JALAS', 'NO MAMEYES EN TIEMPOS DE AGUACATES', AND OTHER FAMOUS PHRASES BY MEXICANS. Americans get the point....we love our culture but we love yours too. I have also read DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA BY THE FRENCH INTELLECTUAL Alexis de Tocqueville, which I think every American should read to see what kind of American values we should strive for. By the way my family owns two houses and drives nothing but Fords, yea that’s right, none of that toyota or honda. Y PURO SINALOA, MORELOS Y GUERRERO HIJOS DEL COCHO. Oh and I really like that song that goes like this…
“The screen door slams
Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again…..

I am a second generation hispanic, and like alot of you I have struggle to make a life in this country. Through that struggle I have learned the value of education and being open to all opportunities. Yes, I have experience racism, that can't be helped it in in all of us including Mexicans ( I have seen "white" mexicans treat "brown" mexicans with more contempt than a white american). No, this issue is not about a nationality, it is about what education gives a society in general, it is about vision, creating opportunity, and achieving all that you can be in this society. I wish I could say Mexico can provide those opportunities for Mexicans, but the government is too shortsighted and afraid to loose power, so only allows a few to fully participate in the society as educated members. And yes Americans (including Hispanic Americans) greed for cheap goods made here in the U.S and from Mexico does not help. It is no longer a question of Jose lowering the wage for Sean, but of Jose lowering the wage for Sean and Pedro .
So my parting thoughts to my hispanic americans, is don't loose sight as to why your parents left Mexico, so honor them by becoming an american and being more than cheap labor. Show all Americans that just as we can assimilate the junk food, movies, and music provided by this culture we can also absorb education, individual thought and innovation. As for the 13 million immigrants who are here illegally, please go home and demand a proper work-visa program from both the United States and Mexico. It is not right to come into a country illegally and expect the rules to be bend for you. Mexico and the United States are major trading partners, they will negotiate. Everyone is under the same law.
