The Vatican has no business commenting on Iraq. The Pope is serving no good purpose speaking out on this matter. He needs to keep his mouth shut. There is enough tension in the Middle East over religious differences. There is no need at all to be adding to this.

Hmm.... why "news" from five years ago being written in present tense? Whatever "rift" existed was, well, five years ago..

The Vatican had opposed the war in Iraq on the basis of "just war theory" which prohibits the initiation of a preemptive war. 9/11 was not caused by Iraq and the evidence of weapons of mass destruction did not justify an attack since there was no evidence of substantial aggression by Iraq against the USA. Other arguments could have been made for the war that might have justified the action, but those arguments were never made. So, the vatican opposed the war.
However, the Vatican also realizes that a unilateral pull out of the US from Iraq would be a grave error. The Vatican's position can be summarized by e what Collin Powell has been alleged to have said, "Once you break it, you own it" meaning you have a moral responsibility to make things right before you leave.
To believe that by simply leaving, you would "make things right" is naive at best and sinister at worst.

The Vatican has a long history of remaining mum when it comes to international issues, to include war, regardless of the morality of remaining silent.
The current conflict in Iraq is no different.
The Pope could more forcefully demand an end to the U.S. occupation - but, for his own reasons, he has decided to sit on the fence.
It is the Christian duty of all Catholics to stand up against the war, even though the Pope has decided to remain seated.

The far majority of the people in the U.S.A have made it definitely clear that we have had enough and we want our prople back home.
What can we do but pray thdastd out president does the rigdht thing for a change and STOP the war.
