"Should any American soldier be so base and infamous as to injure any [prisoner]. . . I do most earnestly enjoin you to bring him to such severe and exemplary punishment as the enormity of the crime may require. Should it extend to DEATH itself, it will not be disproportional to its guilt at such a time and in such a cause…

FOR

by such conduct, THEY BRING SHAME, DISGRACE, and RUIN to themselves and their country."

- George Washington, charge to the Northern Expeditionary Force, Sept. 14, 1775

Amazing Intelligence, Foresight, and Honor.

I guess he would be arrested today and branded AS A TRAITOR by the Republican Party for suggesting such.

now...America's Bicentennial, 1976.

As it was approaching, there was a measure of importantance attached to history that I do not see today.

A curious student,

having heard the word, "NAZI" used,

asked what it meant.

I learned from my 3rd grade teacher,

explaining the horror in 3rd grader terms:

They were people who took over Germany and put the people who didn't go to their church into camps where they tortured and killed them.

Matter-of-Factly, She stated America would NEVER have Torture Camps...

(speaking with reverence on the true greatness of the ideas our country was founded on)

.... because George Washington had said so.

little did she know.

I have a history.

I burned my hand when I touched hot stuff.

I learned from the mistakes of my past, MY HISTORY, and so didn't repeat them.

America has a history. Unfortunately, at least half of our citizens are ignorant of it.

I asked a friend, "How in God's name could a person like George Bush get anything even approaching 40% of the vote?"

He replied, "You have to remember what the phrase 'AVERAGE INTELLIGENCE' means. It means that 50% the people are above average and 50% are Below average."

As the author mentions, George Washington could have been king or emperor at the end of the war. There were those who proposed it. Europeans were flabbergasted when he turned in his sword and went home. Successful generals just didn't do that! I'm not sure that this aspect of his character is even mentioned in our schools today. Is he even taught?

Washington was the real deal the author barely scratches the surface on what a wise and noble person Washington was.

Washington deserves people's appreciation because of his far-reaching influence,as well as the contribution he made to his country and the world, and that's why the great is great.
