Even the promise of unlimited debauchery can't get critics to RSVP "yes" for "Project X."

The comedy about a trio of high school outsiders who throw a raging party in hopes that it'll make them popular is drawing mixed and negative reviews in its opening weekend. AP Movie Critic gave the movie two stars out of four, saying: "'Project X' suggests what it might look like if the teen romp 'Superbad' had been shot with the first-person, hand-held aesthetic of 'Cloverfield' — except it never achieves the hilarity of the former or the thrills of the latter."

On the other end of the critical spectrum is the documentary "This Is Not a Film," opening in New York and Los Angeles this weekend before expanding to other cities. Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi secretly documented a day in his life under house arrest in his Tehran apartment while appealing a six-year prison sentence. Lemire gave it three and a half stars out of four, writing: "In the span of just 75 minutes, it reveals itself to be a powerful statement about nothing less than the paramount importance of freedom and the driving urge for artistic expression."

Here's a look at how these movies and others fared on the top review websites as of Friday afternoon. Each score is the percentage of positive reviews for the film:

— "This Is Not a Film": Metacritic, 90; Movie Review Intelligence, 90.2; Rotten Tomatoes, 100. Average: 93.4.

— "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax": Metacritic, 49; Movie Review Intelligence, 62.5; Rotten Tomatoes, 58. Average: 56.5.
