Any Governor that has a Open Door After Four policy for citizens to meet with him shows me that he is a man true to the purpose of his office. Also, he is a major conservative when it comes to spending - I know since I live right here in SC. He proved when he refused his housing allowance and instead he slept in his office. He has shunned big budget inaugural ball when elected and re-elected. Remember these balls are paid by our taxes.
Mark Sanford has vetoed a few bills recently that he took some heat on. Many of these bills sound good on the surface but critics need to look a little deeper. Pouring money into something doesn't alway fix the problem.
I have meet the Governor on a few occasions and he is an approachable down to earth person. He gives straight answers to questions - even the unpopular ones. Many forget that any increases in the state budget is paid by our taxes.

In response to the last 2 posters from South Carolina, the editorial from the State doesn't mean anything. Besides, most editorials are written by leftist columnists anyway. The difficulties Mark Sanford faces stem from a state congress filled with Democrats and Republicans who spend like Democrats (good ol' boy big government repubes). In South Carolina, the governorship holds less power than in most states which makes it more difficult. Mark Sanford's leadership and principles of small government and controlled spending have been trying to help bring your state kicking and screaming into the 21st century.
Sure he has his critics, like anyone else of course. I can see why people without a sense of personal responsibility and people who look to the government to solve their problems wouldn't like him. If he's not wanted in South Carolina, why was he reelected? If people in South Carolina are too blind to see what a great leader they have, I'd love to see him in the national level.

As a lifelong resident of South Carolina, I can say in all honesty that Mark Sanford is the absolute worst Governor our state has seen in over a century. Just ask TIME magazine... they rated him the 3rd worst Guv in the nation in 2005 (http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1129549,00.html).
His idea of policy making is read polls, get a bunch of ideas, and throw them at the wall to see what sticks.
This guy was born with money and married money, and would not know hard work or a blue collar if they hit him in the face.
SC's largest newspaper, The State, sent their advice to John McCain in an editorial:
"South Carolina can do Sen. McCain — and, more importantly, the nation — another favor. We can point out in no uncertain terms that Gov. Mark Sanford would be a disastrous choice (for VP)."

As a resident of SC, you people have no idea what you are hoping for. I would absolutely refuse to vote for McCain if Sanford became his running mate. The thought of him anywhere *near* the white house gives me chills...

Oh how I wish this guy was running instead of McCain. He should be the poster child for the Republican party. He is a true fiscal conservative and practices what he preaches. People give McCain too much credit if they think he will pick Sanford. Anyone who is well read on the economic teachings of Milton Friedman is ok in my book. He has also been known to quote a relatively unknown Scottish historian Alexander Fraser Tytler.....
"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote for themselves largess from the public treasury with a result that a democracy always fails under loose fiscal policy and is generally followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's great civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence -- from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, liberty to abundance, abundance to selfishness, selfishness to complacency, complacency to apathy, apathy to dependency and dependency back again to bondage."
McCain, I hope your listening....

Mr. Sanford seems different than other politicians - very down to earth and honest man. He doesn't seem like he would or try to squander the tax payers money. We need a man like him in the White House.
