NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. - Donald Trump gets a lot of attention for talking about President Barack Obama's birthplace, but there's another hot subject he likes to speak on: himself. The Donald showed up to the Conservative Political Action Conference Thursday, with an entourage in tow, to give an address before the crowd and stop by a smaller reception. On the politics side, he briefly went 'birther,' when a member of the audience asked him about Obama's birth certificate, and also warned Republicans against immigration reform.
"They are taking your jobs," Trump said. "And you better be careful."
But as someone who's in many ways an entertainer ("Celebrity Apprentice," anyone?) Trump also included these "humblebrags" throughout his remarks.
1.) He doesn't use a teleprompter: During both appearances, Trump make a point to say that he used notes, not a prompter, to give his speech. While that's usually used as a dig at President Obama, Trump noted that most of the other CPAC speakers used a machine.
"I said we can't do that," Trump said.
2.) He hung out with Tiger Woods: Kicking off his speech, the reality star and real estate magnate talked about his morning with golf stars Tiger Woods, Ernie Ells and Phil Mickelson at the Trump National Doral in Miami.
"And they said, 'where are you going?' and I said, 'I'm going to CPAC,'" Trump said. "And I don't know if they knew what I was talking about, [but] they acted like they did, so that was very impressive."
Trump's broader point was to cast himself as job creator.
"I just spent $250 million making it the best resort in the country," he said of his renovated Miami property.
He also noted that he would be doing the same thing in Washington.
"We start in one month on the Old Post Office, which is an incredible building and a tremendous amount of jobs, lots of money going into it and it will be, perhaps, the most luxurious hotel…anywhere in the world," Trump said, noting it's prime location "right next to the White House." (It's actually a couple of buildings down.)
3.) Putin gave him a present: In the current heated international climate, Trump talked about his own good relationship with Russia and President Vladimir Putin.
"You know, I was in Moscow a couple of months ago, I own the Miss Universe Pageant and they treated me so great," Trump said. "Putin even sent me a present, a beautiful present."
This in contrast to how Putin treats Obama, Trump said, noting, "He's like toying with him; he's toying with him."
4.) He's a rock star in China: Turning to another country that has a complicated relationship with the United States, Trump talked about what's popular in China. "The thing they most want? Trump. Can you believe it?" he said. "My apartments, my cars; they love me. They love me."
5.) His speech is No. 1: "Of all of the speakers you had, by far, the best response," CPAC organizers told Trump, according to Trump, something he noted to the full room of people gathered to see him after his main stage speech at a reception sponsored by Citizens United.
