Keeping with tradition, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, politely declined an invitation to attend Tuesday night’s White House State Dinner with French President Francois Hollande, Whispers has learned.
Boehner’s not big on these dinners and hasn’t attended one yet during President Barack Obama’s tenure in the White House. In fact, he may have only been to one ever – a 2007 dinner for Queen Elizabeth II thrown by President George W. Bush – in his 20-some years in Congress. (His staff wasn't quite sure, but this is the last and only one they could recount.)
That’s not to say Boehner isn’t a good time. He talked to Jay Leno about being a red wine and cigarette aficionado, listing these traits as reasons why he would never run for president. He’d probably be pleased with Tuesday night's wine list, too, as there’s an all-American red wine, a Chester-Kidder blend, from Washington state.
