LGBT groups aren’t letting the anti-gay rhetoric of Russia get them down. In fact, the Human Rights Campaign, partnering with other LGBT groups, plans to have a big ol’ party Friday night in Washington to watch the Sochi Winter Olympics' opening ceremonies. As a special guest, the HRC has tapped Sean Avery, the former New York Rangers hockey player, to emcee. Avery has been an ally to the gay community, voicing support for same-sex marriage and trying to rid the sports world of homophobia.

The party will have a protest element too. To thumb a nose at Russia, the $10 suggested donation from the fete will go toward the Russian LGBT Sports Federation. The money will provide scholarships to Russian athletes who want to attend this summer’s Gay Games 9 in Ohio.
