Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus had a helpful public service announcement for folks attending the group's winter meeting in Washington Friday -- don't forget the monster truck show -- he announced from the podium during a brief break from all the political business.
Turns out Priebus is a longtime monster truck show fan and (fingers crossed) will have time to grab tickets to Monster Jam and go with his 8-year-old son, Jack, at D.C.'s Verizon Center Saturday night. "It's become an annual trek and I love it because I love to suspend all the other issues and troubles ...that are in my mind and I have a great time with my son, in a sort of visual circus," Priebus told Whispers.
As a kid Priebus would go to shows at the Rosemont Horizon, now the Allstate Arena, just outside of Chicago. "I'm kind of an old schooler...Bigfoot was everything," he said of his favorite monster truck. These days he cheers on Grave Digger. "There always seemed to be a truck that's got a dog suit on or something like that, so I like that," he added.
So are monster truck lovers more of a Republican constituency? "I think they seem pretty conservative, but I mean conservative in a sense of like Wisconsin-conservative," Priebus said. "They love football, they love going to the fair, they love the truck show, they love going hunting."
And perhaps they could love voting for Republican candidates, too. "It's possible. We used to do voter registration drives at NASCAR events and things like that," Priebus noted. "Yeah, maybe that's a new growth opportunity project endeavor."
