Last week Cuomo was big on Twitter -- on Jan. 2 alone he gained 1,445 new followers -- as he tweeted storm updates, along with more personal content, like photos of New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's swearing-in ceremony and the Billy Joel concert he attended with his girlfriend, "Semi-Homemade's" Sandra Lee, on New Year's Eve.

The only Democrat who did better than Cuomo in the current TrendPo rank, which measures online "buzz" by analyzing news mentions and social media performance, was Sen. Bernie Sanders, who mastered Facebook last week using highly sharable content. On Jan. 3 an ad posted as a status on Sanders' Facebook page attracted more than 9,000 likes and 10,000 shares.

The black and yellow advertisement read: "In 1952, 32 percent of all of the revenue generated in this country came from large corporations. Today, less than 10 percent of federal revenue comes from corporate America." Additionally, the content was linked to Sanders' Senate website and a Huffington Post op-ed penned by the Vermont independent, most likely giving those web properties a boost. (The HuffPo op-ed received more than 4,300 Facebook likes.)

While Cuomo and Sanders are ranked No. 3 and 4, respectively, it's GOP Sens. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul who are on top. Last week, Cruz was declared the winner of TrendPo's "Senate Sweeps," a six week social media challenge that the Texas Republican dominated the whole way through. Paul also came out strong, but was outperformed by Cruz during the competition's "Sweet 16."
