There's a Member of Congress Who Owns Reindeer

A Victorian Santa and reindeer brought joy to a small town.

The '80s weren't a great time for Milford, Mich.

"We had a serial killer murder some ladies in central park and then we had a tragedy with our fire department...there were some firemen killed in a training exercise, and then, following that, we had some young men killed by a train," explained Rep. Kerry Bentivolio, R-Mich., who represents the district. "People didn't really realize it, but in the back of their head they weren't too happy, their subconscious was pretty sad."

So Bentivolio and other members of the community put their heads together to come up with something that might perk up the town. "I came up with this suggestion that we create this Victorian Santa and get real reindeer and a real sleigh," Bentivolio said in a recent interview with NowThis News' Ashley Codianni, which was provided to Whispers. "They didn't really believe I could get live reindeer."

Bentivolio, who was elected to Congress in 2012, got the reindeer. And today, he has six. He owns five does and one buck. (They all have antlers.) And they make appearances with Santa Claus.

"In the last 20 years, we've done over 600 Chamber of Commerce parades on main street USA, probably over 200 tree lighting ceremonies, we do all kinds of private parties," Bentivolio explained. Sometimes the Congressman even dresses up like an "elf helper." His Washington gig, though, has decreased his elf time. "I've been pretty busy doing other things," Bentivolio said.
