Sure, President Barack Obama has held a beer summit, but not with John Boehner. And a little booze may have made a difference, according to veteran Washington Post journalist and White House chronicler Bob Woodward.
Woodward, discussing the current shutdown stalemate in Washington, said the POTUS and Boehner haven't spent enough time together.
"There was [a meeting] in 2011 where Speaker Boehner went over to the White House and went out on the patio outside the Oval Office and they were going to get to know each other," Woodward said Thursday at the Daily Beast's Hero Summit, where he was tasked to talk about "What's the Matter with Washington?"
The discussion was led by the Aspen Institute's Walter Isaacson. "And Obama had iced tea and was chewing Nicorette and Boehner had a glass of wine and he's smoking – it sends a subtle message," Woodward said.
Isaacson jumped in, "The one time we would've wanted somebody to start smoking again." But Woodward wasn't kidding. "You know if you say, 'let's have a drink together,' and somebody gets wine and somebody orders iced tea, you think, I'm on the other side here," Woodward said.
