Don't fret, America! There are some members of Congress willing to at least grab a drink together.
The folks at the viral video site NowThis News gathered two House Democrats and two House Republicans for a "bipartisan pub crawl" segment last month, but Whispers was tipped off to it post-shutdown.
And, wouldn't you know, the members actually agreed on some things.
First, they recognized how immensely unpopular Congress is. (The shutdown certainly won't help matters.) "You guys have probably noticed this, like if somebody asks you, they're kind of jovial, 'hey what you do for a living?' 'I'm a U.S. congressman,' it's like...now it's like this serious face comes in," noted Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., to which Rep. Trey Radel, R-Fla., replied, "womp, womp, womp."
Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., had an even more colorful way to say this. "It's really interesting working in a legislative body where head lice is more popular than you are," she said.
The foursome also talked Obamacare over beers and waters. (Of note, Democrats Sinema and Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Fla., must be interpreting "drink up" the Michelle Obama way, as they were drinking water.)
"One of my big criticisms [of Obamacare] was that it was only Democrats in both the House and the Senate and there's not much legislation in our country's history that has been large and sustainable that is done under one-party rule," Sinema admitted.
Radel, who has been advocating for an Obamacare repeal, was more amicable about the Affordable Care Act during the Capitol Lounge sit down. "But ya'll are hitting it right on the head, which is, it's the law," Radel said, recommending that Congress make the law better by making the rules clear to business owners.
"I think the big key to a lot of this is we've got to stop yelling at each other," Kinzinger said. "I think it starts right here at this table."
