Fashion magazine Vogue profiles Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., shown here with wife Kelley Ashby, in an upcoming issue.

The Vogue profile on Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., has Democrats James Carville, David Axelrod and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand saying nice things about the libertarian politician. But Paul still fell victim to the fashion police.

The fashion magazine's Jason Horowitz describes the senator as wearing "dad jeans," when discussing the duds Paul sported to a Kentucky political rally.

"Wearing dad jeans, a snail-patterned tie, and cuff links fashioned from gold coins given to him by his mother and father, the former congressman and libertarian folk here Ron Paul, the senator accepts another compliment on his resistance to government surveillance," Horowitz wrote.

At another moment in the profile, Paul is caught wearing "quilt-patterned shorts, a Hawaiian shirt, and brown fisherman sandals," Vogue reported. "I try," Paul's wife Kelley Ashby said in defense of his style. (She gets complimented for sporting a pink Ralph Lauren polo shirt and madras shorts.) Ashby is described as the senator's "secret asset" in the piece, though she's reluctant for him to run for the White House. "Because in this day and age it's mostly about character assassination," she said. "When I think of the tens of million of dollars in opposition research they'd be aiming right at us and our family -- that's what it's about."

Besides the "senator's notorious sartorial taste," the profile also reveals the Republican's affinity for Redwood trees. He's attempting to grow one in his backyard. He also despises the squirrels eating his Redwood trees. "We hate squirrels," Paul joked. "Don't put that in the article." And while several Democrats spoke of Paul positively, Ashby admits the couple took some heat for featuring Vice President Joe Biden, swearing in Paul, on the family Christmas card. "I got so much grief about that," Ashby said. "It was just pure laziness on my part. I have three boys who hate to pose for pictures."
