White House party crasher and Virginia gubernatorial hopeful Tareq Salahi is scheduled to have a film documenting his campaign. But the production company slated to chronicle his race is currently embroiled in legal battles and has been accused of targeting its film subjects for scams.
Salahi said he was approached by John Campbell of the Campbell Media Group after he started his campaign.
"They asked permission if they could document the campaign," said Salahi. "Win or lose – ups and downs, to see what a campaign looks like."
According to Salahi's website, crashthevote.com, the documentary is titled "In it to Win it."
"Tareq's story is powerful. When I learned that he was running for Virginia Governor, I immediately thought of documenting the process," John Campbell said, according to Salahi's website.
The Campbell Media Group is near impossible to find – except on consumer complaint website ripoffreport.com. There, users accuse Campbell of fraud and theft.
One user alleges Campbell used the PBS name to attract corporate sponsors to produce TV shows and then stole the funds. Another claimed he takes advantage of his crew, promising payments that never come. A third user, claiming to be an ex-employee, described Campbell as "a bucket of slime."
On recommendation website insiderpages.com, Campbell is similarly condemned as a scam artist.
The Campbell Media Group's only posted phone number was disconnected, but Whispers reached Campbell through the Salahi campaign. Campbell confirmed he was making a documentary starring the party crasher-turned-gubernatorial candidate. He declined commenting on the allegations but said they were untrue.
"We're currently going through a couple of litigations right now, and I can't really comment on that until the litigation's over, but obviously that's false," Campbell said.
When asked about the allegations facing Campbell, Salahi was unfazed.
"I find John Campbell to be a true professional," he said.
