Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is considered a likely 2016 presidential candidate.

Fiery Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul was characteristically impassioned as he conducted an old-fashioned filibuster on the Senate floor Wednesday, trying to stop the nomination of John Brennan as CIA director.

Paul threatened to talk about the administration's drone policies for hours if necessary, saying: "I will speak until I can no longer speak."

As of this story's publishing time, Paul had been speaking for more than two hours.

In the fervent address, the libertarian senator kept returning to a letter he had just received from Attorney General Eric Holder, who said the executive branch could use military force against an American citizen on American soil in "an extraordinary circumstance."

Below are seven of the more lively quotes from Paul's filibuster:

On President Obama: "I will not sit quietly and let [the president] shed the constitution."

On the Senate: "If there were an ounce of courage in this body I would be joined by other senators... saying they will not tolerate this."

On fellow libertarians: "Where's the cacophony that stood up and said 'How can tap my phone without going to a judge first'? I say: 'How can you kill someone without going to a judge first'?"

On Brennan: "I have hounded and hounded and hounded him [for answers]... Only after yanking his chain... does he say he's going to obey the law. We should be alarmed by that."

On the administration's so-called "kill list": "The people on the list might be me."

On the use of drones: "I'm not accusing anybody of being [Hitler]," but then noted the law "should protect you from a president that might kill you with a drone."

On language used by the administration on killing Americans on American soil: "That's gobbledygook."
