White House Turkey Day: Eat the Kale, Then Pass the Pie

The White House's Thanksgiving dinner this year will start with the superfood of kale and end with a glutton's share of pie, according to ObamaFoodarama, an independent blog that shares food and nutrition news from the White House.

The Turkey Day menu—which also includes thyme-roasted turkey, cornbread stuffing and honey-baked ham—appear to be a fusion of the First Lady's commitment to healthful living and the president's well-documented love of pie.

The kale and fennel salad will use veggies from Michelle Obama's signature White House kitchen garden, while the dessert items feature six different types of pie, including the president's favorite flavor, pumpkin.

Last year, White House executive pastry chef William Yosses used a sugar pumpkin for the dessert, according to the Washington Post. This year, the pie will include the superfood of acorn squash but keep its sugar; according to ObamaFoodarama, Yosses "is no fan of what he calls 'spa desserts,' so his pie recipes make liberal use of sugar." Other pies on the table will be apple pie, made with butter and lard, a sweet potato pie, with honey meringue, a huckleberry pie using blueberries, a cherry pie, and a banana creme.
