Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin, R-Missouri, waves to the crowd while introduced at a senate candidate forum during a Republican conference in Kansas City, Mo.

Missouri Rep. Todd Akin is down but not out—he just placed a big ad buy in seven markets, six within the state and one in Kentucky.

Nearly all corners of the GOP are calling for Akin to drop his bid for the Missouri Senate after his comments Sunday that in "a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down." Akin has apologized for the remarks several times, including in a new TV ad.

A media buying source tells Whispers Akin just placed an 8/22-8/27 buy in seven markets, spending more than $150,000 to do so, and that number is likely to increase. The markets are: Columbia, Kansas City, St. Louis, Joplin, St. Joseph, Springfield, and Paducah (Ky.).

Akin has a deadline of 5 p.m. Tuesday to give up his Senate race if another Republican candidate wants to fill his spot.
