At some hypothetical point in the distant past, someone decided that taking a perfectly useful bell off of a cow and bringing it to sporting events, band practice and political rallies was a good idea. The cowbell trade eventually came to largely bypass cattle altogether, as cowbells are now bought, sold and used to make noise during various unrelated activities ranging from football games to Blue Öyster Cult concerts.

With presidential nominating conventions rapidly approaching, a new shift in the cowbell technology is beginning to see the light of day—and where else would it unfold but on people's smart phones?
An iOS app called Cowbell 2012 aims to replace the physical cowbell altogether, offering three different cowbells—one for the Republican, Democratic and Tea Parties—that are capable of making 13 distinct cowbell sounds. The app is perfect for convention attendees worried about their favorite instruments possibly being confiscated or, as Cowbell 2012's website points out, for those who want the tonal expression of a cowbell without being encumbered by carrying one around.
The app also features RSS and Twitter feeds dedicated to whatever party's cowbell you choose to play, and costs 99 cents in Apple's App Store.
