This post is so dishonest that Lauren Fox should be shamed out of the public sphere.

She is a right-wing hack. We know that before we read her words.

But she is also a liar. Knowing that, her words are not worth reading.

Read why I say that here: http://rawitten.blogspot.com/2012/10/lies-and-distortions-gas-prices.html

obama has made it rise vote romeny

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, think about what the governor — think about what the governor just said. He said when I took office, the price of gasoline was 1.80 (dollars), 1.86 (dollars). Why is that? Because the economy was on the verge of collapse; because we were about to go through the worst recession since the Great Depression as a consequence of some of the same policies that Governor Romney is now promoting. So it's conceivable that Governor Romney could bring down gas prices, because with his policies we might be back in that same mess. (Audience murmurs.)

I've been seeing a lot of bumper stickers containing this silly and deceptive use of sampling of statistics. Here is the monthly price of gasoline for 2008 (the year prior to Obama's election): Jan: 3.047; Feb: 3.033; Mar: 3.258; Apr: 3.441; May: 3.764; Jun: 4.065; Jul: 4.090; Aug: 3.786; Sep: 3.698; Oct: 3.173; Nov: 2.151; Dec: 1.689. Obama took over the next month. Dishonest people only take the last month into account and blame Obama for the "huge rise" in gas prices. It's frankly nonsense. Four years later, monthly gas prices are virtually the same. I'll repeat that. Four years later, the price of gas has remained almost EXACTLY the same. [Stats. from the Bureau of Labor Statistics]

What is most surprising in your response to the

the comments made by a reader (wrongly blasting you for reporting the actual gas price increases in the Obama years) is that the W Bush years saw consecutive yearly decline in oil production while the Obama years have seen consecutive yearly increases in oil production!

Linda Lee Grau of CA 2:00PM July 30, 2012

Your article is not accurate. W Bush allowed the greatest increase in gasoline prices in history, mainly due to being in office for that purpose. Recall gasoline at $4.50/gallon in July 2008. W also managed to get gasoline prices back down, by presiding over the biggest economic collapse since the depression. Even bigger than the Reagan collapse in 1987. Gasoline prices and oil didn't increase in Clinton's 2 terms, they declined to near Carter administration levels. Recall $1.25/gallon gas prices in 1998. Liar liar pants on fire! Prove me wrong with the real stats.

This is a case of the numbers being reported as not telling the whole, and correct, story. In may 2004 the average US gas price was 1.86 a gallon. By July 2008 the average gas price was 4.12 a gallon. When the world economy drove off a cliff in August/September 2008 gas prices plummeted to a low point of 1.61 cents a gallon by January 2009. By using the low point at the end of Bush's term rather than the actual prices prior to the economic crash an artificially low rise in gas prices is created. Additionally a lower rise in gas prices is obtained by combining both Bush 1 and Bush II as one entity.

Here's a reality pill for those on the right. Under Bush II oil production started at 5,801 barrels in 2001. In the following Bush years Oil production grew under Bush, right? Wrong.

2002 Oil production fell 0.96%, 2003 production fell another 1.13%, 2004 Production fell another 4.61%, 2005 production fell another 4.44%. 2006 production fell 1.47%. 2007 production fell 0.74%. 2008 production fell 2.25%. In other words every year under Bush production in the US fell, and most of those years were with a GOP controlled house and senate. Under Obama? 2009 production rose 8.29%, 2010 production rose 2.12%, 2011 production rose 3.62%. In fact Obama's 3 years in office have produced 3 of the top 4 increases in oil production per year, Reagan's 1984 increase of 2.2% ranks as the third highest production increase since 1980.

The reality is under the GOP and Bush II production dropped each and every year and gas prices rose to more than 4.12 a gallon over 4 years.

The fact that prices are returning to the pre-crash levels isn't surprising, what is surprising is that people are surprised that as the world economy improves gas prices are returning to their pre-crash levels.

Well, Carter, you're not the worst president anymore!

ccording to this link from gasbuddy.comhttp://www.GasBuddy.com/gb_retail_price_chart.aspx?city1=USA Average&city2=&city3=&crude=n&tme=36&units=us

here are the prices from April, 2009 to the present. To save you time, April...$2.03 a gallon and it just continues to rise to the present cost of $3.89 where I reside. Obama is the one lying.

Richard of FL 11:32AM April 18, 2012

I seem to recall gas prices being under a dollar while Bush was in office and increasing to $4.11 before he tanked the economy. That is a 300% increase. The major reason prices were as low as they were when Obama took office was because 750,000 people/month were losing their jobs.
