If his presidential quest falls short, GOP candidate Rick Santorum might fare well in another calling: used car salesman.[See pictures of the 2012 GOP candidates.]
The question once asked of Richard Nixon -- would you buy a used car from this man? -- is being modernized more than 40 years later. Craigslist and an independent polling firm asked Republican voters who they would trust more when buying a used car: Rick Santorum or Mitt Romney.
The result, according to craigslist and IBOPE Zogby is that Santorum wins hands-down.
Of the 660 adults surveyed, 6-in-10 Republicans said they trusted Santorum enough to buy a used car from him, while less than half said they would buy one from former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
"It's a good [question] to ask of any politician", says Susan Best, spokesperson for craigslist. "It's not just a good test of public trust but also a wise precaution now that you could actually find yourself buying a car from one on craigslist."[In Ohio, Rick Santorum's Downward Spin.]
The gap in trust increases dramatically when surveying Republican women alone. Nearly 7-in-10 women said they would buy a used car from Santorum. Less than half surveyed reported that they trusted Romney enough to buy a used car from him.
Of course not everyone would trust a sweet-talking Santorum: 27 percent said that they would never buy a used automobile from him. Forty-seven percent of Republican voters in Super Tuesday states, though, said they wouldn't buy one from Romney, more than reported that they would. [See today's best photos.]
"It seems like Romney's reputation for flip-flopping has hurt his prospects of a career in the used car business", says Best.
