Romney Won't Receive a Hometown Welcome in Detroit

February 24, 2012 RSS Feed Print

Despite self-appointing himself the "son of Detroit," Mitt Romney won't receive a hometown welcome Friday when he arrives at Ford Field to deliver a speech to the Detroit Economic Club.

The United Auto Workers union, a big Democratic donor, will protest Romney's appearance by orchestrating a grand display of American-made cars that spell out "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt." [See a collection of political cartoons on the economy.]

The group is lobbing criticism at the former Massachusetts governor, who vehemently opposed a 2008 bailout package for the state's struggling auto industry. In that year, he wrote a New York Times opinion piece titled "Let Detroit go bankrupt" and argued "a managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs."

A week ago Romney was losing in Michigan, but a  Rasmussen Poll released Friday shows Romney edging out Rick Santorum just days before the  Michigan primary by earning 40 percent of the vote against Santorum's 34 percent.

The UAW says their goal is to remind Romney why it isn't wise to bet against Michigan. [The Plan to Break Obama]

"Michiganders won't forget how, in their hour of need, he turned his back on an iconic American industry, the city of Detroit, the state of Michigan and milllions of American jobs," UAW wrote in a note to protestors.

Romney's contentious relationship with the UAW is nothing new. In the 2008 opinion piece, Romney called the union culture of the auto industry "destructive" and advised the automaker's union to take a new direction to regain profits.

to Mrs. D of Ca,

Isolationism isn't a healthy option at all, for example who can think North Korea has contented citizens for it? Dr. Ron Paul favors engagement and free trade with other countries, it's only that we don't go around pushing with our military to get it done on terms favorable to the political lobbyists... see? Regarding religion and state, yes, let's keep them separate so that Each citizen can have his (own religion) without Interference from the state about it. When we don't see that, we're blinded in our zeal for tyranny.

There are Ron Paul supporters young and old, I'm almost surely older than you are Mrs. D, and I surely don't mind anyone who is rich if they earned it honestly and use it wisely.

Your confidence that Mitt Romney would be restrained in the use of force is belied by his public statements in favor of pre emptive military strikes to achieve diplomatic dominance. He would attack Iran to "make sure they don't do anything dangerous". Yet, in attacking them, he'd be guaranteeing that many Iranians will then Try to do dangerous things to us back.

And Mrs. D, fixing the economy involves more than Mr. Romney is equipped to understand. We're talking about a candidate who said openly that he doesn't know what industrial hemp is. Romney's claim to fame in business was firing enough people to save corporations and then hiding the profits in tax shelters in the Cayman Islands. Running a lemonade stand would have been honorable by comparison for Mitt Romney, if you ask me.

You may support whom you choose Mrs. D, but I'll take mine straight up... American style. Why do you think that more of our soldiers have contributed to the Ron Paul campaign than to the campaigns of all other candidates combined, including Obama?

Peace, freedom and prosperity..... the time now is to cut bait or fish. Or retire to a long dark night of sorrows.

The unions have Detroit locked up. I am voting for Romney and here is why. Not just because I believe he is the only one who can beat Obama and get votes from moderate Dems, GOP and Independents, but I trust his integrity and economic ability. He knows how to help encourage business growth and prosperity. I hear attacks on his integrity, with no fact to back it up. He has lived a pretty clean life and I have been watching for many years. He understands the economy and how to fix the mess we are in. He had to contend with an 85 percent Democratic majority in Mass., and I think he did pretty well under the circumstances.

His health care bill was 40 pages, not 2000 and it included things that people in his state wanted. It is a states rights issue. it.

I also like Romney's foreign policy. He believes we need a very strong military as a deterrent. I think he will use it only as a last resort. I am a strong believer in the adage "Walk softly and carry a big stick". I believe it is the best deterrent.

I blog a lot and noticed that quite a few people on the blogosphere would never hire a rich person...it is an automatic disqualification; I guess they prefer an inexperienced person who has never even run a lemonade stand to fix this huge economy. The majority of the people who blog seem to be young, anti-war, Paul supporters. They seem most concerned with isolationism and secularism. They also don't like that Romney is rich. They discount that he was able to earn it himself, legally and pays all taxes legally required. His Mormon religion is spoken of in a derogatory manner, even though he does not discount others religious beliefs or lack of such. I believe it is un-American to disqualify a person because of their religious beliefs unless they make it a part of their stance or denounce other American’s belief systems.

According to the stats, we are now over 15 trillion in debt and borrowing over 10 billion a day. Our opponents don't seem to understand that when the well runs dry there will be no one to bail us out?

On a local political ad Romney attacks Obama for funding programs with money borrowed from China. Well you Republicans are funding YOUR WARS with money borrowed from China. You are funding YOUR elite class tax cuts with money borrowed from China. You are funding Bush's unfunded medicare part D program with money borrowed from China. I supported your party for 40 years until you lost your minds.
