Holiday Blues: 39 Percent Don't Want to Fly

December 19, 2011 RSS Feed Print

If the thought of traveling during the Christmas holidays makes you ill, you're in good company. A new travel industry survey finds that 39 percent would rather take the bus than fly.

Irked by new travel security requirements, higher traffic and the clutter of presents, many air travelers express frustration about flying.

[Lower Gas Prices Could Rev Up Holiday Spending.]

Lessening the hassles, said the U.S. Travel Association, could win back customers. "Our research shows that reducing hassle without compromising security will encourage more Americans to fly — as many as two to three additional trips a year — leading to an additional $85 billion in spending that would support 900,000 American jobs," said Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association.

We just received their Christmas-Hanukkah survey which found:

When it comes to holiday air travel, a striking number of passengers would rather not fly. Two out of every five passengers (39%) would rather take another form of transportation (e.g., auto, train, bus RV) than fly to reach their final destination.

-A majority of passengers (70%) say they will check at least one bag during their holiday travels.

-A majority of all passengers (58%) will bring holiday gifts with them.

-More than half (63%) will check their holiday gifts.

-One third (32%) will carry their gifts onto the plane.

-Most passengers traveling without gifts chose to ship them to their final destination (65%).

-About one third (32.8%) of travelers said they avoid flying with gifts because it is too much hassle.

-Most passengers (56%) are unaware of the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA's) new pat down policy for children.

-More than one third (35%) of passengers don't know how much airlines will charge for their checked bag.

I BOYCOTT flying all together due to the TSA and I used to fly 20-30 times a year! I will NOT be pumped full of radiation so some fat fingered creep can sit in backroom with a permanent erection peeking at my naked azz. I will also NOT let some overweight McDonalds breathing TSA goon bark orders at me to spread my legs so they can "touch my sensitive areas". I will not tolerate some sticky fingered low paid TSA goon to rummage through my bags (like they are at a garage sale) and end up finding stuff "missing". I mean for Gods sake TSA has job wanted ads on PIZZA boxes to get what ever low-life thug they can! What these people that work for the TSA couldn't even qualify to for a 1-900 phone sex chat job? You see what quality screeners the TSA looks for. A dog catcher gets more respect! If any of you didn't know...TSA goons that work near the backscatter machines are NOT allowed to wear dosimeters! I slipped onto a AFGE (TSA union) site and found a TSA screener from DFW that said she has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer (she also talked about other screeners that are going thru the same thing rgiht now and others that have already died).....M.D. said it was due to radiation exposure. When I left a comment to her about the possibilty of "sneaking" dosimeters in under their uniforms......my comment quickly vanished. DHS and TSA don't want to get busted in their lies with actual PROOF! Hmmmm....maybe TSA/DHS wants to slowly get rid of the low life they hire? When Class Action finally hits (because of backscatter machines) the manufacturer has already made their fortune and invested to make more money. You think any Class Action is gonna even be a fraction of the wealth they have collected?

It's not just the crowds and security, it's the airlines themselves and their total lack of customer sevice. I absolutely refuse to spend my hard earned money on an airline ticket only to be treated like garbage. I either take Amtrak, drive, or cruise to my destination. I would be flying this Christmas if it weren't for the lousy experience. I know I'm not alone. Maybe these complaints won't fall on deaf ears in the airline industry as I'm sure they're losing millions of dollars in revenue due to people like me.
