Pollster John Zogby updates our weekly Obama Report Card with a grade on the president's performance. Zogby uses his polling, expert analysis and interaction with major players to come up with a grade and some comments that capture how he sees the president's week ending.
John Zogby on Week: 138
"After seeing his job approval (39 percent) and 'deserves re-election' (33 percent) poll numbers hit all-time lows and the percentage saying the U.S. is on the wrong track reach the high of his tenure (75percent), President Obama needed a show of strength in his jobs presentation to Congress. He did that, challenging Republicans to back a plan that has twice as much in tax cuts as it has in spending; and then doubling down on the deficit bill by promising proposals for even more deficit reduction. He will also ask his party to swallow savings in Medicare and Medicaid. Obama promises to take his case to every corner of the nation, which may not force the Republicans to give him a legislative victory, but will at least help him launch his 2012 campaign by running against an unpopular and dysfunctional Congress."
