The out-of-work staff of Capitol Hill's Tune Inn, dubbed by some as "America's Bar" after it burned on June 22, will get a helping hand from friends, congressional staffers, and even a few friendly lawmakers Friday at a fundraiser organized through Facebook.
"Please come to the fund raiser for the Tune Staff this Friday at the American Legion Post 8! We have some great raffles and awesome bands playing such as Bonjour, Ganesh! Side Dish & Free Lobster Buffet and The Doctrinnaires. 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., make sure to stop by!" says the page. Friends of the Tune Inn have also created a Web page.
The famed pub, one of Washington's original dive bars known for it's eclectic customers, cheeseburgers, and trophy animal wall hangings, was hit by a fire three weeks ago, closing it for the foreseeable future. It was featured on Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
The news hit Capitol Hill's collection of reporters, lawmakers, and congressional staff hard, but promises by owners to reopen the Pennsylvania Avenue bar has encouraged old patrons.
Many are expected at the fundraiser two blocks away at the Capitol Hill American Legion post. Drawing them in will be the auctioning of some of the wall trophies and booths from the bar.
On the Facebook page, a debate has already erupted over the sale of the animal wall hangings, especially of a deer's rear end. "I want the deer ass," wrote one supporter, prompting another to type, "Please don't auction them off—auction naming rights + a plaque: 'The so-and-so memorial deer ass'."
