Supreme Court Justices Want to Keep Doors Open to Public
Tweet Share on Facebook May 11, 2011 Comment (1)They fight about everything at the U.S. Supreme Court. Even the doors to the building. It used to be that visitors could walk up the white marble steps to the main double doors under the words “Equal Justice Under Law” to enter. Now security sends visitors to a lower level to enter, though they can still exit from the big doorway on the main floor. Well, Justice Stephen Breyer recently told Congress that there was a tug of war over the issue and his side lost. “We don’t always agree. I thought we should have left it open,” he said. But Breyer holds out hope that the majority decision will be overturned in time. “Eventually things will calm down, I hope, and eventually, at that time, the security needs may diminish. And eventually, at that time, I hope it will be possible for every American to walk into that plaza, walk up the steps under Equal Justice Under Law, and walk into the building.”

GOP Taking Cues from Obama for 2012 White House Campaign
Tweet Share on Facebook May 10, 2011 Comment (5)There were a lot of reasons why Sen. John McCain lost to Barack Obama in 2008. He was outspent, his message lacked inspiration, his economic plan was weak, and, for many, Sarah Palin was a pill. Now a new look at the campaign suggests something scarier for the Republican Party. Its shrinking and dying base is no longer big enough to deliver a victory and McCain did nothing to woo new voters. In contrast, Obama, seeing his base also insufficient to push him across the line, made the unconventional move to take the party faithful for granted when mapping campaign visits. Instead he focused on recruiting new voting groups.

U.S. Gives Pakistani Police $162 million in Fiscal Year 2009
Tweet Share on Facebook May 9, 2011 Comment (46)They couldn’t find Osama bin Laden or practically any other major al Qaeda figure on the State Department terrorist list, but don’t blame a lack of money for the inadequacies of the Pakistani police. The Pentagon and State Department forked over $162 million in fiscal 2009 to aid Pakistani cops, second only to Afghanistan in the region. A new Government Accountability Office report says the cash was used to train and equip police and that 39 countries get Pentagon-State funds for counternarcotics, counterterrorism, and anticrime missions. The agency didn’t comment on the value of the Pakistan investment. It says the money supports activities by the Frontier Corps, Frontier Constabulary, and Antinarcotics Force on the Afghan border to combat the drug trade, crooks, and terrorists.
