Texas Gov. Rick Perry Raises Money for Vietnam War Project

Texas is well known for big hats, big appetites, and big ranches. And when it comes to the Washington project to fund a Vietnam War education center adjacent to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, their checks are big too. Jan Scruggs, founder of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which is overseeing the new project, says Texas Gov. Rick Perry is hosting a fundraiser for the center. “Texans are real patriots,” he says. Groundbreaking is set for next year. Of the $85 million needed, a third has already been raised, including a $3.3 million donation announced last month by Australia’s prime minister, Julia Gillard. Her country lost 521 troops in the war.
